ABL Asset Management ABL Islamic Pension Fund
Islamic Retirement & Pension in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
The cheapest incumbent Islamic VPS fee stack in Pakistan - 1.5% equity / 0.60% debt / 0.40% money market - from ABL Asset Management (Allied Bank subsidiary, AM1 by PACRA), launched August 2014. FY26 returns: equity +33.25% versus the KMI-30's +39.18%, money market 9.63%, debt 9.07%, with the equity sub-fund up +524.53% cumulative since inception. Shariah oversight is the fully named six-scholar Al-Hilal council under Mufti Irshad Ahmad Aijaz with published screening criteria. The oddity: the June 2026 FMR does not print the sub-funds' net assets at all - the only cohort VPS with undisclosed AUMs - and minimums plus tax-credit worked examples also require the offering document. ABL also won KPK and Punjab Islamic pension money-market mandates in November 2025.
On fees, ABL's Islamic VPS is the best incumbent deal in Pakistan: 1.5%/0.60%/0.40% undercuts every traditional rival, and eleven years of history with a fully named Shariah council make it credible. On disclosure, it commits the category's oddest sin - a pension fund whose own monthly report won't tell you how big it is. That matters practically (sub-scale sub-funds can carry ugly expense ratios, as Alfalah's 8.20% TER equity sleeve shows) and reputationally (what else isn't printed?). Our recommendation logic: if ABL will confirm sub-fund sizes and minimums when you ask, the fee stack makes this a top-three incumbent choice alongside Atlas; if the opacity persists, Atlas offers similar economics with its numbers in print.
Pros
- Cheapest incumbent fee stack - meaningful compounding advantage over MCB/HBL/Alfalah-tier pricing across decades
- Fully named third-party Shariah governance with published criteria
- Mid-pack but real performance: -5.9pp FY26 equity lag beats HBL (-7.2pp) and the 10pp+ laggards
- Strong three-year fixed-income records: money market 16.18% and debt 15.40% annualized
Cons
- The June 2026 FMR omits pension sub-fund net assets entirely - the only cohort VPS with undisclosed AUMs, so you cannot verify the scheme's size from its own report
- Minimum contribution and tax-credit worked examples unpublished - offering document required for basics
- FY26 equity still lagged the KMI-30 by 5.9 points - cheap fees have not bought index-matching stock selection

Shariah Compliance & Oversight

Why It's Halal
ABL Islamic Pension Fund (launched August 2014) runs the standard three Shariah-compliant sub-funds - screened equities (Meezan Bank, Lucky Cement and OGDC the June 2026 top holdings), sukuk-based debt (corporate sukuk ~29% of that sleeve) and Islamic money market - under Al-Hilal Shariah Advisors' published methodology with the six-scholar council ABL names in full. Its competitive weapon is fees: 1.5% on equity, 0.60% on debt and 0.40% on money market are the lowest sub-fund management fees of any incumbent Islamic VPS in Pakistan (MCB charges 2.5%/1.25%/1.0%; HBL and Alfalah cap similarly), beaten only by zero-load Atlas on blended cost and by digital challenger Mahaana. FY26 performance was respectable in the fixed-income sleeves (money market 9.63%, debt 9.07%) while the equity sub-fund's +33.25% trailed the KMI-30 by 5.9 points - mid-pack among peers - and has compounded +524.53% since inception. The transparency failure is singular and material: the June 2026 FMR does not print the pension sub-funds' net assets anywhere, making ABL the only cohort VPS whose size cannot be verified from its own report; minimums likewise require the offering document.
